Armchair Locomotion is a collection of poems of new observation and heightened movement. Whether for contemplating ideas while at rest or moving mindlessly, author Jen May manages to turn image to the surreal and action to dream.
This debut collection is comprised of a journey through days and seasons, urban to landscape, from the sterile to the emotional.
May has a talent for fresh images, in "Renewal," for example mist covers everything like secrets and wears a frost bandage the next morning.
Extraordinary.
Armchair Locomotion Jen May Adam Nicolai Books
I had the pleasure of hearing many of the poems in this book right from the author's mouth when she was a featured reader at a Water Street Studios event. May packs her poetry with quality metaphors that encapsulate observations many people would never even make. I particularly like how the home-bound train commuters "pour out limply into the day as it breaks over our heads" in her poem "Day Train."I'll be picking up her future work. And I highly recommend Chicago-area poetry fans catch a live reading if they can.

Armchair Locomotion Jen May Adam Nicolai Books Reviews
Armchair Locomotion is a dreamy collection of hushed imagery, hidden longings and observations straight from a mature woman's heart. The title was taken from the closing line of one of the poems, "Therapy", and it is clear that for May, writing is a source of healing. My favorite poems in this collection were "Water Sign", "Take Me To", and "Cave Dweller".
In my house we jockey for the wide and cushy reading chair, the one by the west window with the natural light. A sturdy lamp on the ample tabletop next to the chair provides a runway for a moving assembly of magazines, laptops, paperbacks, hardbacks, and now...a new chapbook. Armchair Locomotion, by Jen May has found permanent spot on the table.
Jen May’s poetry is emotional. "Upon the Death of Jim Harrison" pays tribute to Harrison’s “Primitive man you explored the river flood and flux against the mountainside stone faces with deft landscape scribbles/and the intentions of horses, insects and dogs.” When I read this poem I too am “listening to the cows and darkness, your non-lament about youth and death,” and the release of Jim Harrison, returning to the river, breaks the grip of death for all readers.
"Library" informs the armchair traveler as to the poet’s space “Just dusk in the Midwest/my book lying open in the last light/and the type lines remind me of cornrows/I harvest them as I read aloud/the way my tongue and teeth/collaborate to form each word…gush it from my mouth/like great combines forming corn kernel pyramids”.
We are fellow travelers in May’s journey toward a joyful maturity, with side-trips and painful pitfalls along the way. We flinch if we do know “..What it’s like to be a woman/balancing on the edge of herself/running on the shoulder of chaos daily.” We may squirm and redden over the revelation of sexual intimacy but May pulls a sheet over the entanglements and we breathe out, with just the right touch.
Jen May’s first chapbook has whetted my appetite for her next book, Battle Cry. This poet warrior has claimed herself, stood her ground and taken us on a tour of her soul and youthful experiences in Armchair Locomotion. This reviewer looks forward to picking up a spear and running barefoot alongside Jen May in what will no doubt be a true Battle Cry and a call to living.
A wonderfully expressive poet with an intense yet gentle voice. Jen May takes an ordinary moment and transforms it to extraordinary with passion, simplicity and emotion. I especially loved "Turning In". Pick this up, read it with your morning coffee and be inspired. You won't be sorry!
